The Protocol

LoRaWAN (Long Range Wide Area Network)

The LoRaWAN® specification is a Low Power, Wide Area (LPWA) networking protocol designed to wirelessly connect battery operated ‘things’ to the internet in regional, national or global networks, and targets key Internet of Things (IoT) requirements such as bi-directional communication, end-to-end security, mobility and localization services.

Benefits of this technology:

  • Low power - battery powered devices require charging far less frequently, in fact some require charging as infrequent as once every ten years.
  • Open Source - lower cost to develop (no licensing fees) for LoRaWAN so many new sensors and applications are available versus proprietary technology.
  • Long Range - with an effective range of ten miles, far less antennas are required to provide reliable coverage.

The Network

Helium - The Peoples Network

Helium is a global, decentralized, distributed network for IOT Devices that provides a global network that enables mobile devices to have consistent connectivity.

Helium already has partnerships in agriculture, environment, pet care, asset tracking, and more. As this network of partnerships grows, the service will become more powerful and be able to serve many different users.

Benefits of The Peoples Network:

  • Low cost - The Peoples Network is designed for ultra low cost connectivity to encourage the growth of IOT enabling a smarter more connected future. In face Helium is often 10x less expensive than cellular. An example is our GPS tracker which is 5x less expensive over 5 years than its cellular equivalent
  • Open Source - lower cost to develop (no licensing fees) so new sensors are being created every day. Current sensors use cases include (but are not limited to): temperature, moisture, GPS, dog collars, vehicle/package tracking, agriculture, air quality, health monitoring, food safety, energy monitoring, security and much more.
  • Flexibility - because Helium leverages LoRaWAN, no only can devices be mobile but doesnt require cellular or internet access in the immediate location. This is an advantage in cases of vacant homes, remote sites and areas where internet connectivity is not cost effective.
